A little common courtesy
After visiting my mom and brother in my hometown over spring break, I came upon a very sad and true realization.
My dad lived and worked in Placerville for 30+ years. He knew MANY people (it was standing room only at the memorial service as people flooded into the hall.) The memorial/celebration was a statement in itself and all those people that came were very gracious and paid their respects to my family.
However, there were some who were not at the memorial....which is fine, not everyone could make it due to schedules/location etc. But when my mom sees them now in public on the street....they make it seem like nothing has happened!? No mention of Dad....no "how are you doing?" or "I'm really sorry to hear about your loss".......and it just blows my mind!
Take our local hardware store for example......my Dad spent thousands of dollars in that store. I even went in to run errands for him so often that they knew who I was. And now.....everytime my mom heads in there or sees someone from the store..... NOTHING!!! They haven't said anything! I thought, well maybe they don't know......but once again my mom reminds me.....its Placerville.......everyone knows.
Now, don't get me wrong. I can understand that some think "Well, I dont want to say anything or bring it up because it may upset her." That's bullshit. We are reminded everyday that he's not here. We won't get anymore upset if someone else reminds us. It is simply just a polite and kind way for a friend or member of the community to say "hey, I know what happened, and I am sorry and I've thought about you." It hurts even more when nothing is said at all.
I used to be in this awkward situation.......I never knew what was the right thing to say. But now that I've been through it, I can see how valuable and important it is to send cards and condolences. It helps to ease the pain...you don't feel so alone.
So, if you ever know anybody who has lost someone close to them, do the right thing and just simply give your condolences. If you feel like you don't know what to say, "I'm sorry for your loss" is enough. It is MUCH BETTER than saying nothing at all.

Nice car
This '90s VW jetta was parked next to me in the Campbell parking garage....
Those are little toy motorcycles that are glued to the dashboard.
